about

Son of Cataclysm was founded by Stewart Walker and graphic designer Easton West to reconcile life and creativity in our era of aprés de siècle anxiety. Focusing on a rotating set of milieux — environmental catastrophes, man's inhumanity to man, and our species' historical predilection for predicting the end of the world — Son of Cataclysm hopes to express its psychological and emotional response through music, artwork, and dissemination of primary sources from present-day and historical catastrophes.

Musically building from the template of electronic dance rhythms, Stewart adjusts the palette with a variety of recorded instruments, heavy synthetics, and unabashed sampling of past prophets, fed through a meatgrinder of broke-ass guitar pedals or high-end analog equalizers. Artifacts of the pre-Apocalypse #2: Monkey is the second of Stewart Walker's five-EP series. Potomac and South Capitol is written as an homage to Southeast DC at night, empty surface roads with blown out streetlights yielding to overlit pulsating traffic tunnels capturing a memory of late excursions with no set destination. It's an ecstatically warm, yet jerky track that floats in and out of ambiance, synth flashes and stumble step groove. Spitting Sugar, named for a half-remembered scene of The Tin Drum, was a group effort with guitar and bass contributions from Takeshi Nishimoto of I Am Not A Gun, Reynold, and Stewart Walker. A goosebump-stimulating combination of yearning solo guitar and celebratory flamenco strums and soundboard taps.

Stewart Walker has been releasing electronic dance music since 1997, and worked with some of the most prominent minimal and techno labels in the community (M-nus, Tresor, Force Inc). His debut album “Stabiles” on Mille Plateaux was an instant classic of proto-Minimal techno, designed as audible room sculptures which DJs also liked. Shortly after founding Persona Records in 2001 in Boston, Massachussetts he moved to Berlin and ultimately released two well-received albums; the downtempo “Grounded in Existence” (2005) and his follow-up to his groundbreaking techno album “Live Extracts” entitled “Concentricity.” (2008)

about

Stewart Walker Berlin, Germany

Stewart Walker has developed a new palette of processed instruments based on electric guitar, and drums which he continues to intertwine into baroque orchestrations as he began on his original Persona Records label. Only this time composed with more expressionist noise and urgency; spanning Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. ... more
